Dichroic Glass – What is it?

Dichroic glass was originally created for the aerospace industry. A highly technical process is used to deposit a multi-layer coating on to the glass in a vaccum, so that quartz crystal structure and metal oxides are vapourized on to the surface to form a crystal structure.
The main characteristic of dichroic glass is that it has a transmitted colour (this is the colour you can actually see through the glass if it is clear glass) and a completely different reflective colour ( this is the colour you see when the light bounces off the surface of the glass) these two colours shift depending on the angle of  view and the play of light.

Because of this dichroic jewellery is notoriously difficult to photograph, capturing the beauty in the piece is very difficult, so bear this in mind when viewing the pieces online.
